Hybrid Editor XE - ISPF like editor for Linux and/or Windows

Hercules fans,

I wasn't sure if this editor has been mentioned here before or not. I
thought some Hercules fans might find it useful. I came across this
editor after a recent editor discussion on the OpenCOBOL List. It's
available at:

http://www.geocities.jp/sakachin2/index.htm

The editor itself looks/feels very ISPF editor like. The menu,
although having a few options numbered the same as ISPF, looks nothing
like ISPF.

It can use a couple of different external source highlighting
packages. After a few tweaks I have it working well with languages
besides COBOL, such as python. I've been tinkering a bit with Plone
lately. I think I've found a new favorite editor. I might just be
giving up on vim. :-)

The only problem I'm having with XE is that I couldn't get it to build
just its curses based executable. I had to install several Gnome
devel libs to make its configure script happy. And, to make matters
worse the curses executable was linked against all the Gnome libs, so
I can't remove them without breaking it.

if you have even a little budget, the workstation group
(http://www.wrkgrp.com) has an XE editor that runs under Unix/Linux that
may be exactly what you're looking for. the owner is a z/OS sysprog and
a good friend, and their stuff works great.

It looks great, but function keys, home key, etc., don't seem to work.
I downloaded the demo to give it a try. I found its keyboard mapping
utility and went through key by key remapping them which seemed to
work. But after exiting the keyboard mapping utility the function
keys, etc., still wouldn't work. Also, it doesn't seem to have source
highlighting.

I haven't used this but those who want an edit on steroids might also want
to try THE, the Thomas Hessling Editor. Although it is billed as "XEDIT"
compatible it will also work in ISPF mode and support REXX scripting.

I've tried THE a few times, including yesterday before trying Hybrid
Editor XE. It's ISPF like, but not very close. To move around in the
editor one has to use the home key to move back and forth between the
command line and the edit area. In the edit area one has to hit the
F12 key to get to the prefix area. Also, many of the prefix commands
I tried in THE, like r to repeat a line, don't work, even though
they're documented in the THE documentation. In Hybrid Editor XE one
can use the enter, tab, and arrow keys to move around in the editor
much like in ISPF's editor.

By default its not very ISPF like but try "COMPAT ISPF ISPF ISPF". Just like
XEDIT on VM you really need to spend a little time tweaking its profile
"profile.the". Mine is:-

mouse on
Compat = xedit xedit xedit
PSCR 48 100 RESET

My main grip is that on Microsoft Windows you can't re-size the screen (xve
seems ok). Apparently on "X" you can....
