Hi driftwoodusa

Option 6 UTILS on the TSO Applications menu simply opens HELP member UTILS to provide an overview of potentially useful stuff that's available on TK4-. It's meant as a starting point into exploring the system, but it doesn't provide any function besides displaying the HELP member.

Proceed from there by trying to open a HELP member with the name of the utility of interest, for example HELP member C3270 describes the C3270 utility. Most items listed under UTILS have an associated HELP member, but not all. Those not having a HELP member can usually be found in one of SYS2.ASM, SYS2.CNTL or SYS2.JCLLIB.

Cheers

Your question pertains to MVS, not Hercules, and would thus be better served by asking it on the support forum devoted exclusively to MVS: the "H390-MVS" support forum.

Hello!
Yes, but he's welcome to join anyway and kvetch in the regular MVS
group. I'll even waive the entrance fees.

Of course this presupposes that Fish gets the joke.

I couldn't find that newsgroup, or any MVS newsgroup. And the only Hercules
newsgroup I could find was alt.tv.hercules, which I suspect is completely
unrelated.

Instead of confusing the OP by suggesting he look to newsgroups for forums
for help, the direct approach might be better. I would suggest one of the
Hercules MVS mailing lists:

To subscribe via e-mail:

H390-MVS-***@YahooGroups.com

Turnkey-MVS-***@YahooGroups.com

Or via the suboptimal YahooGroups web interface:

http://Groups.Yahoo.com/group/H390-MVS/

Like just answering his questions here ?

(Like Jurgen did).

In addition to Jurgen's best-answer, my non-expert answer would be to
add to look through either bitsavers.org (download the index-xxx.txt
file)
..
(maybe something like
ibm/360/os/R21.7_Apr73/GC28-6763-3_TSO_Terminal_Users_Guide_Rel_21.7_Aug74.pdf
) ?

or just google / yahoo/whatever each of the commands... which might
lead to an "IBM booshelf" or some such.

(Just about) everyone who is a member of Hercules-390 is also a member
of H390-MVS.

Enough already with the "forum-police-redirects". It's like dealing
with the government :/

These groups get ~1 or 2 questions a week at most. Let's try *
encourage* new members, not frustrate them.

/rant over.

Perhaps you meant the opposite? Just about everyone who is a member of H390-MVS is also a member of Hercules-390? (Hercules-390 has 7340 members. H390-MVS has 3157 members.)

I appreciate the sentiment, Mike. I do.

But at the same time I also feel it's important to provide members with the highest quality help too.

Failing to inform members who might not be aware of it about the availability of a technical forum devoted exclusively to the operating system they obviously need help with is IMO doing a disservice not only to them (by not letting them know of a forum where they can obtain the highest quality help) but is also doing a disservice to the other members of *this* forum too, thousands of which are likely not interested at all in questions regarding operating systems which they're not interested in.

Directing such questions to the forum where such questions are *expected* and *wanted* does a service not only to the user asking the question but also to the users in this forum as well.

I was only trying to help by informing the user about something they obviously weren't aware of.

Those numbers look it might prove my point even further.

I.e. any MVS experts are probably already reading H-390, so it may be
pointless to redirect someone to H-MVS.

Over the last ~10 yrs or so that I've been a member, I bet no more
than ~100 (more like ~50) of those members have actually posted to
either of those groups.

There may only be 50-100 members even *reading* these groups anymore.

If I get really bored, maybe I'll write a "data-mining" program to see
which members have actually every posted :/

These are installation specific utilities, and there may or may not be documentation for them on your system.  Typing the command "HELP DATE" may show you what documentation you have on your system for the specific command "DATE".  Of course there are other commands in addition to those you have listed like SHOWMVS and others.  They live in SYS1.CMDLIB usually, and the corresponding help files are in SYS1.HELP.
