hello,

i am running Hercules Version 3.06, Built on Jan 10 2009 at 01:56:22 on windows vista on a notebook. I have installed loopback adapter for hercules and i can successfully use it when i am working without any network card attached or when ehternet card is attached.

when i am working in home office i use ethernet card to attach to my router and from there to internet - still all is working fine. to access intranet from my home office i must start an additional VPN connection (PPTP). When this connection is active i can no longer use by CTCI devices. When i power on hercules i get following error:

TunTap32.dll version 3.2.1.160 initiated
HHCTU002E Error opening TUN/TAP device: 00-00-00-00-00-00: Invalid argument
HHCCF044E Initialization failed for device 1001

i have coded following statement in hercules conf:
1000-1001 CTCI 172.16.1.100 172.16.1.1

loopback adapter is first connection.
TT32TEST is working fine.

can anyone help ?

Start with neither Hercules nor your VPN connection running.

Open a Command-Prompt window and enter "ipconfig -all". Post the
results.

Then start TT32Test. Enable verbose debugging mode. (Test -> Verbose
debug mode)

Start a test (Test -> Start) and enter 172.16.1.100 and 172.16.1.1 as
the two IP addresses (i.e. the same two IP addresses you plan on
using for Hercules).

- From your Command-Prompt window, enter "ping 172.16.1.100". Do you
get a reply?

Try the same ping test from a different workstation on your local
network. Do you get a reply?

Try pinging from TT32Test (Test -> ping someone) to 172.16.1.1. Do
you get a reply?

Try pinging from TT32Test (Test -> ping someone) to some other
workstation on your local network. Do you get a reply?

Stop TT32Test and exit, saving the results to a file. Post the
results.

Establish your VPN connection.

- From your Command-Prompt window, enter "ipconfig -all". Post the
results.

Start TT32Test. Enable verbose debugging mode. (Test -> Verbose debug
mode)

Try pinging from TT32Test (Test -> ping someone) to some other
workstation on your local network. Do you get a reply?

Disconnect from your VPN and stop TT32Test and exit, saving the
results to a file. Post the results.

Some other things to try:

- Disabling ALL checksum offloading options on your adapter (both
transmit and receive for IP and UDP and TCP).
- Disable security on your VPN connection (not necessarily
permanently, but only temporarily so we can see whether it has
anything to do with your problem or not)

VPN software creates a dynamic private hidden internal bridged virtual
network on top of your host machines local
Network stack. Local network software and local net connections will still
function but ip addresses dhcp/dns ect.
Get overloaded with the vpn assignments. Your original ip setup no longer
exists. Local lan access is dead. Access
To other machines on your local net disappear.

Some rare vpn software supports a parallel bridged connection to your local
lan-stack. But most corporations disable this
Feature in the vpn-clients they distribute for obvious security reasons.

I have executed a vmware virtual machine which I shared with my co-workers
remotely while connected to a vpn. The vm machine
Got assigned a valid dhcp address from our corporate net vpn-dhcp server.

So a local herc connection while connected to vpn should work. But external
local lan connection to herc will not work
Because your external lan is dead.

Also your ctci ip address <1000-1001 CTCI 172.16.1.100 172.16.1.1> to your
local nic is no longer valid because the vpn
Ip-address has been overloaded on top of your nic. Essentially the local
nic is dead.

One strategy to deal with this is to create a vm-image of your work machine
(including vpn) and run your vpn-connected work
Machine inside the vm-image.

Fish,

Peter Vels sent me following suggestion (many thanks to you !):

Try it using the MAC address version of the Hercules config line, something like this:

#                      Mac address       Herc IP addr  placeholder
#                      ----------------- ------------  -----------
1000-1001 3088 CTCI -n 02-00-4C-4F-4F-50 172.16.1.100 0.0.0.0

using this syntax there is no error powering on hercules and ctci device is working fine (and also my other vpn traffic). please let me know if i should still collect the doc.

many thanks to all,
werner

No, not if it's working okay now. There's no need.
