I am in process of retiring after a life time of MVS systems and software
work. I have just installed Hercules V3.07 and MVS V3.8J on Linux with a
view to converting some of my software, so that I can share some of my
skills and experience with the community. I have accumulated vast assembler
libraries with techniques, APIs, utilities and products.

Hello, Spaceman; welcome to the group.
What version of Linux have you installed Hercules on?

You might want to consider using instead TK4.8 that includes Hercules
although I do use a Herc latest v4 release sometime to override that as
I run other stuff some times.

I did install the TK4.8 version for a quick look, then I system programmed it
back to a basic state so that I have to IPL manually and still have the TK
utilities. I don't want to use an over automated system for the time being
until I have re-familiarized myself with MVS system programming, and I have
gained an understanding of how the external communications with the virtual
machine works. I need to completely understand this new environment because
it is virtualized and backleveled compared with what I work on
professionally.

Hi Spaceman.

MVS discussion is best done here:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/H390-MVS/info

And if you are interested in running AM31
and/or AM64 programs on a slightly
modified MVS 3.8j, then go here:
