Discussion:
using tapes in Hercules

Hi there,

I need to use the tape facility in Hercules to test my DFRMM VRS setup. I simply ran a IEBGENER job to copy a disk dataset to tape but my job gets stuck at the mount. Nothing gets mounted. I tried it with/without DFRMM started and same result.

Here is what I did:

1) Wnet to HTEINIT and initialized a tape 000000. By using that options, I was forced to specify a file in a directory on my PC, so I chose 000000.HTE

2) I received the message that the tape is successfully initialyzed

3) Ran a test IEBGENER job but my job gets stuck.

Did I do everything I needed to do or there are some steps left to do?

Any tips is greatly appreciated.

HETINIT only creates a file that has specialized data to emulate tape datasets.
Hercules does NOT know about this tape so it won't be automatically attached.
From the Hercules console, you must ATTACH / DETACH tapes manually. See attach
and detach in the Hercules manual.

If you want to automount tapes, you will need to configure it. I've never used
it so I can't tell you any of the specifics.

Regards, Jon Perryman.

Hi there,

Yes, you need first with the ATTACH command, so that Hercules knows about the tape, than you need to MOUNT it under zOS. I used automount-mvs.perl script, which does this automatically.

HiErwin,

Thanks for the quick reply.  Where do you issue the ATTACH command and what is the format.  I'm using tape 3490 device # 580.

Since you have the device already defined in the hercules conf, then you can use
"devinit 0580 D:/MVS/TAPE/TST001.HET". You issue it from the Hercules console

Change this to

0580 3490 *

and once Hercules is up running, then do the devinit (in the Hercules console):

devinit 580 c:/zos110/configs/tapes/000000.het

To play it safe, after that, you may also vary online your tape:

vary 580,online

on the MVS console.

Hi Rene,

Thanks.  I need to create 10 tape datasets on 10 different tapes.  Should I issue the "DEVINIT..." command 10 times every timeonce for each job or I can automate it so Hercules will doe it instead?

Here is how my config file looks like.  Highlited one are the one I'm worry about.
I'll change the 580 statement as per your suggestion but can you check the other ones?

First, this group is not the proper one to ask your question. You should ask in

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/H390-MVS/

As for your question, you may avoid the ten devinit if you use ten cuu and initialize each one for a tape:

0580 3490 c:/zos110/configs/tapes/tape01.het
0581 3490 c:/zos110/configs/tapes/tape02.het
...
058a 3490 c:/zos110/configs/tapes/tape10.het

But I can't say if this is the answer for you because the context here is rather vague.

Hi Rene,

tapes.  Should I issue the "DEVINIT..." command 10 times
every timeonce for each job or I can automate it so Hercules
will doe it instead?
- - - remainder snipped - - -

There are several methods to automate tape mounts.
I prefer the P/390 automount CCW so there is no timing
issue but an MPF exit using DIAG 8 might be okay also?
HAO doesn't allow substitution the last I saw but
otherwise would be the simplest.

Warning, there are several tape mount message numbers
you will need if automating by message number.

Another warning, zOS would get real unhappy if you
unloaded a tape volume. Your code should only issue
the mount and leave the unload to the operating system.
There are also MVS console unload and vary offline
commands but are not needed for normal operations.

Two possible methods are:

There is tape handling information and system exits
that allow automatic tape mounts in:

http://cbttape.org/ftp/cbt/CBT751.zip
I wrote it for OS/390 in Flex-ES but zOS in Hercules
should work fine. I didn't use DFSMSrmm but left the
exit hook there.

Another file that might be useful is:

http://cbttape.org/ftp/updates/CBT696.zip
I haven't looked at it but it looks newer.

Either might be overkill for what you want but do
have information that might help?

Posting on an MVS specific list would be better:
