I'm not familiar with MF, so pease be indulgent if I'll do something
wrong.

I try run z/OS on Hercules. But it won't work.
Could somebody take a look at my hercules.cnf and output log?

Hi,
this is a normal question in the first IPL of a newly installed ADCD:

IXC420D REPLY I TO INITIALIZE SYSPLEX sysplex-name, OR R TO REINITIALIZE
XCF

Explanation: This system is trying to initialize or join a sysplex, but
cross-system coupling facility (XCF) found one or more systems that appear
to be part of an existing sysplex sysplex-name. XCF determined that this
system cannot join the existing sysplex because of reasons specified in
preceding messages. This message prompts the operator to decide whether
the systems identified in message IXC404I are actually active in the
sysplex and whether initialization should continue.

In the message text:

sysplex-name
The name of an existing sysplex.

System Action: Sysplex initialization processing stops until the operator
replies to message IXC420D.

Operator Response: Choose one of the following replies:

I
To request that sysplex initialization continue because none of the
systems identified in message IXC404I are participating in an
operating sysplex. This system will perform cleanup of old sysplex
data, initialize the couple couple data set, and start a "new"
sysplex.

R
To request that XCF be reinitialized. XCF will stop using the current
couple data sets and issue message IXC207A to prompt the operator for
a new COUPLExx parmlib member.

Choose R also to change the sysplex name and reinitialize XCF to
remove any residual data for this system from the couple data set. The
system prompts the operator for a new COUPLExx parmlib member.

If an incorrect reply is entered, the system issues message IXC208I to
notify the operator of the error. The system then reissues message

Since You have not started a tn3270 session, you have to respond
.I
at hercules console (HC)

I'm right assuming you own a licence to run z/OS 1.4 on Hercules?

Alessandro! Thank you very much..)
I got ADCD a month weeks ago from our IBM representative, and try to
get into z/OS forth day. But I'm still too far from the goal.

I've not found anything about that in Hercules documentation and

Explanation: This system is trying to initialize or join a
sysplex, but

cross-system coupling facility (XCF) found one or more systems that appear
to be part of an existing sysplex sysplex-name. XCF determined that this

preceding messages. This message prompts the operator to decide whether
the systems identified in message IXC404I are actually active in the
sysplex and whether initialization should continue.
sysplex-name
The name of an existing sysplex.
System Action: Sysplex initialization processing stops until the operator
replies to message IXC420D.
I
To request that sysplex initialization continue because none of the
systems identified in message IXC404I are participating in an
operating sysplex. This system will perform cleanup of old sysplex
data, initialize the couple couple data set, and start a "new"
sysplex.
R
To request that XCF be reinitialized. XCF will stop using the current
couple data sets and issue message IXC207A to prompt the
operator for

a new COUPLExx parmlib member.
Choose R also to change the sysplex name and reinitialize XCF to
remove any residual data for this system from the couple data set. The
system prompts the operator for a new COUPLExx parmlib member.
If an incorrect reply is entered, the system issues message
IXC208I to

Subject: [hercules-390] z/OS on Hercules
Post by gardenman1966
I'm not familiar with MF, so pease be indulgent if I'll do something
wrong.
I try run z/OS on Hercules. But it won't work.
Could somebody take a look at my hercules.cnf and output log?

Hi Daniel,
if you put ESAME in the ARCHMODE z/OS don't run because of arch. limits:
ESAME is 31-bit addressing mode; z/ARCH is the correct 64-bit addressing for
z/OS

Hi...
In parameter ARCHMODE put ESAME, not z/Arch.

I'm not familiar with MF, so pease be indulgent if I'll do something
wrong.
I try run z/OS on Hercules. But it won't work.
Could somebody take a look at my hercules.cnf and output log?

ESAME is 31-bit addressing mode; z/ARCH is the correct 64-bit addressing for
z/OS
This is incorrect. There are four legal values for ARCHMODE:

S/370: System/370, downward compatible with System/360 software as described
in System/370 Principles of Operation.

ESA/390: 31-bi. XA and ESA (ESA is a superset of XA).

ESAME and z/Arch: 64-bit z/Architecture mode.

Thanks

Hi Jay,
I apologize for my mistake.
Actually z/Arch and ESAME work the same (at least in z/Linux ...)

In parameter ARCHMODE put ESAME, not z/Arch.
This became supported in 3.03.

I try run z/OS on Hercules. But it won't work.
Actually, it does appear to be working.

I assume, for the purposes of this discussion, that you have a license from
IBM to run z/OS on Hercules.

17:42:27 * IXC420D REPLY I TO INITIALIZE SYSPLEX ADCDPL, OR R TO
REINITIALIZE XCF. REPLYING I WILL IMPACT OTHER ACTIVE SYSTEMS.
The program exception messages (HHCCP014I) are normal.

You appear to not have a 3270 system console connected to your Hercules
system before you IPL. z/OS is sending master console messages to the HMC
console, which Hercules emulates by sending the messages to the control
paneel. The message above is waiting for an operator reply. You'll need to
reply by issuing the command ".r 00,i"; the . is the HMC reply prefix
character on the Hercules console, and the rest is a standard z/OS reply
command.

As Arno said...
Try to change the cputype :), but you might want to look that message up
you get down under the ipl. I'm sure you can find it. It is in most
manuals, even in the once for zOS 1.4.

But one other thing, i can see it's the ADCD you're running?
If you got a licens to run the z/OS AD you should also be aware that it's
a contract violation to run it on other than FLEX-ES.

As you would already have an FLEX-ES running box, the config files are
included for that on you're CD1. This would should work out of the box!

Anyhoo, as might want to test something on zOS 1.4w and on hercules.
I might suggest you to take a look at the MP3000 config files for FLEX-ES
where you can see the informations you need. Cputype, model, id and so on.
Use the NME file as that's the text readable one.

And for one other thing.. Technical.. your system did IPL, so the support
from this point of should be directed to ibmadcd-r/Jw6+rmf7HQT0dZR+***@public.gmane.org or you could
ask if there where any of the IBM employes here on the list who could help
you get in contact with you're local AD support number.

Cheers

"But one other thing, I can see it's the ADCD you're running?
If you got a licens (sic) to run the z/OS AD you should also be aware
that it's
a contract violation to run it on other than FLEX-ES."

David,

Unless you are a patent lawyer and reviewed their specific contract or
work for IBM, how do you know?

I worked in IBM sales for a while in the early 1980s. Also, a few
months ago I hired a patent and trademark lawyer to look into certain
aspects of IBM licensing and Hercules for my own purposes
(specifically for asking questions of interest to me; and not to
solicit or lobby for Hercules licensing because I don't care if IBM
does or does not license its software on Hercules. I don't run IBM's
software at all).

When I worked in sales at IBM (as an S.E.), the local branch sometimes
gave letters to customers allowing them to temporarily run software
they were not otherwise licensed to use. These letters were used in
circumstances where it was in IBM's interest to allow it. Sometimes to
assuage a customer's reservations about buying something; in
situations where IBM might be culpable in a customer dissatisfaction
issue; or because a good customer needed some software for a very
short period of time (such as a post VSE-to-MVS conversion need for
VSE) and the local IBM sales branch allowed it for the good will it
generated. The relevant requirement was it served IBM's sales
purposes. For example, VSE users were sometimes allowed to run the
licensed program product "Performance Tool" so that the IBM salesman
could empirically prove to the customer's management that a hardware
upgrade was absolutely necessary. IBM also seemed to look the other
way, temporarily, when a customer was hit by a disaster, but it was
its choice to do so. IBM was not heartless. I do not if these
practices continue.

This is the important part to the Hercules group's forum: invariably,
the agreement included a stipulation that these customers not disclose
their forbearance to anyone else. It seemed to me, at the time, that
they didn't want this to become common practice, but IBM wasn't going
to be so doctrinaire that it would loose multi-million dollar sales.
Based on this experience, my opinion is that if IBM did allow someone
to run its software on Hercules, it would probably require strict non-
disclosure and just because someone poses a question on this forum
about a licensed product doesn't make him a thief or criminal.

It was important for me to hire a patent lawyer since, according to my
regular lawyer; the opinion of an attorney with a patent specialty is
the only opinion that mattered in patent, trademark and copyright law.
It carried special significance in court. Though not the subject of my
meeting with the patent lawyer, his short answer about Hercules and
IBM's software policy is: "it is whatever IBM management says it is."
It's their property. They are mandated by their fiduciary
responsibility to shareholders to protect all IBM corporate property
and use it for IBM purposes as they see fit.

My points here are:

1) I see little reason for IBM to change the way things are (licensing
wise). In fact I think things are exactly the way IBM wants them to
be. Not only do they not have to explain themselves, its probably the
best course of action for them not too. I "think" (old IBMer's pun
intended) that if IBM ever caught someone commercially using their
software improperly on Hercules, they would view the infraction as
leverage in a marketing situation and the perpetrator would be far
worse off than someone who had been honest.
2) IBM may be allowing some users to run IBM software on Hercules, for
IBM's purposes, with the stipulation that that fact not be disclosed
publicly. The Hercules group has no way to know someone is using IBM's
software improperly and cannot in all fairness assume someone is.
Also, in the absence of any information from IBM that someone is using
its software improperly, it is not the Hercules Group's responsibility
to police and enforce the law or IBM policy. As a matter of fact,
legally, in the United States, the opposite might be true. It could be
construed as a form of vigilantism.
3) No one, this group and Funsoft included (and maybe even parts of
IBM since, because of its size and diversity the guardians of its
formidable assets are like a modern day version of the multi-headed
guard dog Cerberus: http://www.answers.com/topic/cerberus), know what
anyone else is allowed by IBM to run.
4) I don't know the extent of sibling rivalry within IBM, but it is
not inconceivable that one part of IBM gives someone permission to use
ADCD without support, that being an internal IBM issue. In such an
instance, and I know it is complete conjecture, you may find someone
poking around the Hercules forum with questions about ADCD who has not
stolen it. IBM is being feckless in this situation and would have a
tough time proving this group is acting with anything less than
probity.

Sorry for the long post.

Sarge is still fully supported (SNA will have a Sarge installation
server kit soon, but for Hercules you're better off just doing a
network install).

We're trying to get s390 back into etch. I'm working on getting
parted happy with s390 now.
