I don't know the answer to your question,
but if you outline what you did, ie what
commands you issued on Windows or
whatever and what files you used, to try
to install it, and what happened when
you did that, someone might be able to
spot which bit is wrong.

Installing on Hercules is not much different from installing on a real
IBM machine, or on an IBM zPDT. So you should expect that install
documentation comes with your zLinux image. Where did you get that,
i.e.which distribution are you trying to install?

I am using hercules (3.12) on linux machine.
Previously i was able to IPLed OS/360 on the same configuration and it was
successfully running.
Now i am trying to install zlinux(RedHat Linux s390x debain 8.4.0) on the
same configuration mainframe with Linux materials are quite rare online.
After IPLed the device I am stuck in configuring the network device after
when I select protocol for this connection(1. s/390 2. Linux 3, OS/390)
Error: Installation step failed.
The failing step is: Configure the network device

Thanks Fabio and Rahim for sharing useful materials.

OS/360 requires an S/370 processor
(ARCHMODE of S/370).

z/Linux requires an ARCHMODE of z/Arch

So you need to change your hercules config
file.

Please post your entire hercules config file
so that we may be able to spot an error.

Also, the error you show below regarding
S/390 etc - does it appear in the hercules.log?
If so, please post the entire hercules.log.
If it doesn't, then please cut and paste the
entire screen, which includes that message
below. ALSO post the entire hercules.log.

Paul , Your are correct that we have to set ARCMODE to z/Arch or ESAME
as z/Linux
requires an ARCHMODE of z/Arch
But i am now stuck at the point where we chose the mirror for debian
archive (in the middle of installation where it download release files. i
also try different mirror but still same error.

None of your images came through. Please
post just text data. Also you didn't post the
hercules.log.

I'm surprised to see you trying to IPL
a rescue disk. What other files have
you got in the "dasd" directory? ie
do an "ls -l" in dasd and post the
output of that too. If you see a cckd
file with something better than
"rescue", try adding that to your
config file and try IPLing that instead,
and post those results, as they are
probably more useful.

I am trying to install zlinux on Hercules bid
did not getting any way. No link over internet
describe much information to install and run zlinux.
Can any one help.
I found this link:

http://hercules390.996247.n3.nabble.com/z-Linux-on-Hercules-a-HOWTO-FAQ-and-Guide-V0-0-1-td52208.html

which is apparently a link to an old message
in this group, but for some reason I was unable
to find the old message in this group itself.

It's like Yahoo swallowed the message or
something.

Regardless, I didn't see any mention of the
rescue.cckd that you have managed to
obtain. So I wasn't able to spot what other
cckd files would be in your directory that
might be a better bet to ipl. I will instead
need to wait for an "ls -l" of the dasd
directory from you before making the
next guess.

It seems to me that the people who went
to all that trouble to create an s390x Linux
should have provided a ready-to-run
turnkey system with cckd disks and a
suitable hercules config file. ie the same
thing we have for MVS, VM, DOS/VS
and MTS.

Here is a config file from a running Debian Zlinux.  I saw you had
specified CPUNUM as 8 that is one point of concern.
I never had any issues instaling/running debian under hercules with
NUMCPU 8....

So far - the only issues I have with z/Linux are :

- Booting the Ubuntu 17.10 installer (dated 14/10/2017.. Same with the
10/10/2017 version) both boot end with :

HHC00814I Processor CP00: SIGP Set architecture mode            (12)
CP00, PARM 0000000000000002: CC 1 status 00000100
Uncompressing Linux...

XZ-compressed data is corrupt

 -- System halted
HHC00809I Processor CP00: disabled wait state 0002000080000000
000000005EADBEEF

* PS : Tried with the ins, created an OMA tape - and booted it ... Even
tried under z/VM 6.3... (both tape and RDR)... same results.
* PPS : The statement   "ARCHLVL   ENABLE BIT49" needs to be added for
ubuntu to even consider booting. But no Program interrupt is met before
the message, so I doubt it has anything to do with it.

- Booting the Debian 9 installer ends with trying to find a network
device... (I suspect an issue with the network install udeb) Booting
Debian 8 installer and installing Debian 9 fro the Debian 8 installer works.

Atul,

This is apparently simply a networking configuration issue.

How is you rig connected to the internet ? What IP range does your linux
host use ?

If your hercules linux guest is on the same network (192.168.250.0/24)
have you enabled IP forwarding and setup ARP so as to enable your router
to know how to reach the guest ?
If your hercules linux guest is on a different network, has you router
connecting to the internet been given a static route to the network in
which the hercules linux guest resides ?

You may also elect to install an HTTP proxy (squid/squid3) on your host
if you only intend to reach the internet from your linux guest to
install debian.

Where did this rescue.cckd come from?

It is a huge 2.8 GB file.

It is not a file in the Debian archive (I
downloaded and checked).

You might like to try "ipl 120" instead of
"ipl /mnt/iso/d390.ins" and see what
happens.

Based on this:

http://www.josefsipek.net/docs/s390-linux/hercules-s390.html

# dasd
0120 3390 ./dasd/3390.LINUX.0120
0121 3390 ./dasd/3390.LINUX.0121

My guess is that when you IPL d390.ins,
it creates that rescue.cckd. Where did you
get instructions to name your cckd file
rescue.cckd? It's not a problem, I'd just
like to know what instructions you are
following.

Bad archive mirror
An error has been detected while trying to use the specified Debian archive mirror.
I suspect that the problem is bad timing. You
seem to have downloaded 8.4, but 9.2.1 has
come out recently. So 8.4 may have disappeared
from that mirror.

I suggest you try again and this time download
9.2.1. Or try a different mirror.

Ivan,
I created rescue.cckd manualy by using
dsdinit command

i have also tried to follow
http://www.josefsipek.net/docs/s390-linux/hercules-s390.html

and do as it is state in document but still NO LUCK and it stuck at the
same point where it stuck at previously.
i.e
choose mirror for archive debian.
Then it show :
Bad archive mirror
An error has been detected while trying to use the specified Debian archive
mirror.

Possible reasons for the error are: incorrect mirror specified; mirror is
not available (possibly due to an unreliable network connection); mirror is
broken (for example because an invalid Release file was found); mirror does
not support the correct Debian version.

Additional details may be available in /var/log/syslog or on virtual
console 4.

Please check the specified mirror or try a different one.

I am not getting what is wrong with my Network .
one thing I have doubt on
0A00,0A01 CTCI -n /dev/net/tun -t 1500 10.1.1.2 10.1.1.1

10.1.1.2 is the S390BOX
10.1.1.1 is host box

which is present in my cnf file.

Atul
Atul,

When you describe your networking setup, you need to also indicate how
your host is configured to connect to the outside world... If the
configuration isn't done properly, the guest running under hercules
won't be able to connect to the outside world beyond the host machine in
itself which would explain why the debian setup program isn't capable of
reaching the debian servers containing the debian packages.

So basically, we also need :

- The address of the network interface connecting to the lan
- The router address/routing table

Depending on how these are configured in relation to your hercules
networking setup, certain aspects need to be configured in order for the
guest to be able to talk to the outside world beyond your router.

Ok, it sounds like the mirror is either
uncontactable, or it doesn't know what
to do with your request.

Either way I am out of ideas. Perhaps you
can instead ask Rahim to make his CCKD
files available for download so that you don't
need to fight with networking or some other
difficult-to-resolve problem.

Actually I have one other idea, which I
mentioned earlier.

Using your current Hercules config, why
don't you try doing:

ipl 120

(to boot your rescue disk), and see if that
produces a machine good enough to do
whatever it is you are trying to do.

What is it you are trying to do anyway?
Why do you have an interest in running
z/Linux?

- The address of the network interface connecting to the lan
- The router address/routing table

Ivan, I am using a private network provided me one of my local Service
Provider.
He just gave me a connection and did not tell any thing about his network
setup.
And I also try it using different network(hmm
with another Service provider, college LAN and also using my cell phone but
still same.

Paul
I also tried ipl 120 and it shows me error

ipl 120

HHCCP030E z/Arch mode IPL failed: Invalid IPL PSW: 00060000 0000000F

What is it you are trying to do anyway?
Why do you have an interest in running
z/Linux?

It is my college project and one of my Professor provided me to do that
He wants to run zlinux on hercules and then i have to write a simple
application on zlinux(in c programming) which will be intractive.

Ok, are you able to provide more information
on this "release file"? Are you sure something
was downloaded? What was the name, how
big is it, what are its contents?
I have checked my machine's current directory
where we are installing zlinux , /tmp,~/Download
and some places but i did not fount any thing
related to release file. that's why i am wondering
is it really downloading something or just
checking the debian archive mirror or something.

Hmmm. A massive disk called "rescue" is
not even able to be IPLed?

Pretty weird.

Well, give that you will be assessed on the
C program rather than whether you are able
to install z/Linux, would some IPLable
z/Linux cckd disks be good enough for you?

If you would like that, I suggest you confirm
that you would like someone (Rahim etc) to
make cckd disks available for download
somewhere. The cckd disks just need to
contain gcc so that you can compile a C
program, right?

Or maybe your professor can make some
cckd disks available on the college computer.

Atul,

Apparently you were asleep during the Networking 101 class...
If you cannot provide any additional detail or describe your networking
setup through functional terms, then I'm not going to be able to help.

So take the easy approach :

- On your host install SQUID3 (apt-get install squid3)
- Configure squid so as to allow anyone on your private internal
hercules network (10.0.0.0/8 in your last example) to use your http
proxy (squid3)
- Specify http://<your host IP address>:3128 as the proxy during debian
setup on hercules.

Ipl 120 sounds right;  you ipl a device not a file.

Hercules supports the IPL of a file.  The file identifies specific
files to loaded into memory at specific locations as part of the IPL
function.  Frequently these IPL'd file uses the .ins suffix.
