I didn't see any screen shot attached, but replies normally specify a
reply number and the text of the reply, e.g.,

r 00,'U'

note that the number will vary from 00 upwards, and usually (except at
IPL) is shown in the message. IPL stays at 00 for the first few questions.

You need to type it all as one line:

R 00,U

Until the console services are available you need to prefix each reply with R and then the number of the reply like R 01,U or R 02, etc.

There's still no screenshot.

You need to provide the full exact message
and the full exact command you are using,
and the full exact response you get.

You probably need to type:

r 00,u

to solve your problem. Have you tried typing that?

I believe lots of people are running z/OS on
Hercules, but they mainly keep quiet about
it because it's technically illegal.

But my understanding is that you need to
find the "ADCD" on the internet somewhere.
That's all I know. I've never even bothered
to do that search. I use MVS/380 instead.

Note that IBM offers a legal way of running
z/OS on your PC and charges something
like US$6000/year for it.

Paul,

Whilst in recent years its been pretty standardized, it still depends on local legislation. What is clear is that in most countries simply copying and possessing the software is illegal, plain and simple, no technicality, even if you don't use it. What I am not clear on is, given that you have copied it, and have not signed any licence or agreed to any licence, is using it an additional offence? I think any replies to this should go to one of the legal groups.

Rob, I am told that IBM monitor these groups for illegal activity...

It looks like they've changed the pricing. I remember when Sipples announced it on IBM-MAIN long ago, it was around $10K which was $5K for the key and software and another $5K for a year's maintenance or some such. Looking at the page today, now it's $299 for the stick and $3750 for the annual licence fee. You still have to be a PartnerWorld member though, so not just anybody can waltz in and buy one. The price is pretty good, considering it's IBM we're talking about here.

No, there is no PartnerWorld membership required, anybody who is willing to spend the money can just go ahead and buy it, like any other product IBM is selling. There exist fixed term and perpetual licenses and both are quite attractively priced nowadays. Perhaps still upper limit for pure hobbyists, but on the other hand: I know of hobbys being much more expensive ;-)

The website

https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSTQBD_12.0.0/com.ibm.zdt.overview.gs.doc/topics/c_product_overview.html https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSTQBD_12.0.0/com.ibm.zdt.overview.gs.doc/topics/c_product_overview.html

has all information needed to get an impression of the product.

Still expensive, at least for me, but nice to know
"mom" now sell the product to anyone willing to
buy it.

I've just read about RedHat being bought by IBM,
for around 34G$.

Any open IBM will open its mainframe policies,
and lower the price for its emulator, after this
step?

Tailor Made
The zPDT technology is available in two versions designed for two
distinct purposes. Any System z customer, service providers, business
partners and ISVs can get the simpler version as part of the Rational
Developer for System z Unit Test (RDz-UT) offer. The RDz-UT is for
single-image, pre-production z/OS sandbox environments only. It may
not be used for production workloads, including production module
builds, pre-production testing, stress testing or performance testing
– access to a full-size production z/OS system is required.

IBM PartnerWorld ISVs can get zPDT technology as part of the IBM
System z Developer Discount Program (zDD). Nomination for the program
can be done online. Under the zDD program, qualified ISVs can use zPDT
technology with any number of OSs, images and users. It’s ideal for
supporting multiple environments and configurations.
My understanding is that for an extra $1K/year
you don't need to be a PartnerWorld member,
ie anyone can waltz in and buy one.

The article you mention ist dated from 2011. The z/PDT technology, as well as packaging, licensing and pricing have significantly changed since. I couldn't find a price on the IBM site but Google turned up another site with prices. $10K apparently gets you the zd&t Personal Edition *with a perpetual licence*. Support after that is $2300 a year, which I spend more than that now on PC tools. I wasn't interested before because you had to cough up the $5K every year to keep the key going, but I could go for the perpetual deal. I'll have to think about this, it's pretty tempting.

On more thing should be noted about the perpetual license: You don't have to buy the yearly support as the license is valid forever. So, as long as you don't mind staying on a z/OS version you downloaded shortly before the year of included support expired, you'll be fine forever without paying for further support.

I consider the risk of running without support being very small for hobbyist usage... one typically will not run into severe bugs out of a sudden, after having had the product in use for a year.

However, if one always wants or needs the latest and greatest features of the architecture and of z/OS, the story is of course different: Then nothing helps but paying the yearly support fee.

Hi Mike

The article you mention ist dated from 2011. The z/PDT technology, as well as packaging, licensing and pricing have significantly changed since. I'd recommend sending people directly to IBM's official websites for the ZD&T offering, which have under the topic "ZD&T Personal Edition" exactly the type of information a (potential) hobbyist user will bei interested in. Sorry if I’ve missed an earlier message. Is someone running z/os on
Hercules? Where can one get it (z/os)?
Oh, here we go.
