For those of us who actually used a card punch ...

Here's a virtual one:

Very clever, and for once something "useful" in javascript ;/
(As opposed to the massive bloated "survey" junk now on IBM's sites)

For me, it was college, ~1978 a . Cobol "Hello World" program, that I
vaguely remember was "lots" (~30+ ??) cards !

That brings back memories. I made modifications to the OS/360 writer
program, and one of the changes was to punch one binary card with the
job name (9*12 array) as a separator. But I never got a chance to add it
to HASP.

when I was an operator on DOS 360/30  machines, with production running
in 24K BG and F1 partitions, the F2 was on rare occasions used to print
a spooled tape out put from a 7010 without a printer but usually vacant.

So I wrote a program I could run that would be a virtual keypunch,
putting the cards in the middle pocket...and modified bits in storage
manually to assign the punch to F2 even if it was actually being used by
another partition too.  So that was a "virtual" keypunch in a way.  I
then had to run them through an interpreting O29 to get the printing on
them.

Thanks! Now I at least know how uppercase
and numbers are represented, which goes a
long way.

Note that you can use your own keyboard to
type characters.

Think about this ... object code used to be a *deck* of punched cards! Now
you know why object code is called an *object deck* and why it is always
F80 in LRECL and RECFM.

Brings to mind the practical joke that an other operator and I perpetrated that was NOT appreciated back in the mid seventies on a 360/50 running DOS 26.2 - the TP Monitor was in a 'mini tray' - composed of several object decks all link edited together and stored on DASD... each composite deck marked across the top with program name and date.
We found a similar tray and filled it with scrap cards and reported that the tray containing the TP Monitor had fallen and the cards were all scattered... there were of course no names or dates present...
Ha.

If you look at any reference card from the era (360, 370,...) there is a
column listing the punches for all 256 characters!

Great! I see it now on the S/370 Reference Card.
