Discussion:
[hercules-390] Configuring TCPIP from Windows to Hercules

Hello,

Are there any Procedure that has to be done in the windows before configuring the TCPIP stack on Hercules.

Does anyone have any URL or steps that are required to make Hercules connectable via FTP ?

Any suggestions would be helpful to proceed further ?

I am basically looking for the steps to be performed from the windows side

make Hercules connectable via FTP ?
I'm not 100% sure, but I think for FTP
to work you need the operating system
to do some work. Are you using MVS 3.8j
or z/OS? MVS 3.8j needs a special
Hercules too (the one that comes with
TK4-) - no other flavor of Hercules will
work.

I am basically looking for the steps to be performed from the
windows side
I believe you will be needing my CTCI-WIN product:

http://www.softdevlabs.com/ctci-win

You can evaluate it for as long as needed but once your evaluation is over an official purchase would be very much appreciated. Sales from my SoftDevLabs web site helps to pay rent and buy food, etc.

Thanks.

Can you use your Windows firewall to block the TCPIP connectivity?
Using a private IP address that doesn't pass through routers
will also help.
Slight configurations "errors" would also block.

If you want FTP without TCPIP connectivity, then why not use
IBM PC 3270 File Transfer Program instead?
A.K.A. IND$FILE which is a Send and Receive Host Transfer
that allows upload and download between your TN3270 and TSO/E.
It is slower than TCPIP FTP, has different options, but works
If you can log on to zOS TSO, you have it already configured
and available in both your TN3270 and TSO/E.

That may be a good thing.
Telnet handles port 23 well and 24 or 110 may work, but
it may not negotiate correctly for port 21?

ftp uses two ports ... 21 and 20.
21 for control and 20 for data.
a telnet to port 21 doesn't allow the data connection to be opened
which is why it closes straight away.
Joe
- - - old notes snipped - - -

FTP data port is normally port 20 but is not used
until it is needed.

I can FTP to a system and type all day without issuing
a command that requires a data transfer.
No get, put, or any type of list and the data port won't be
opened, used, or looked at.

Mhmmm ... and ports 21 and 20 are where? On the mainframe!

Which is my point ... telnetting to port 21 on the mainframe from an
ephemeral port on the client doesn't mean squat. (Yippee ... I can
establish a TCP connection!)

You dont truly know if FTP is not working until you try to do a data
transfer.

Sheesh.

I would like to slightly nuance that. Although of course you wont know for
sure if ftp is working until you actually try to transfer data with ftp,
establishing an tcp connection does tell you some things which may be of
use in troubleshooting ?

- The tcp/ip stack of both client and server are correctly set up and
running.
- The connection in between the two isnt blocked by firewalls; routing is
ok.
- Something is listening on the server side and accepting incoming tcp
connections. (presumably the ftp server you configured).

You're very welcome. :)

I am continually disappointed how frequently people expect others to help them with a problem they're having without providing even the most basic of information to go on.

I frequently find it difficult to bite my tongue and remain courteous anyway in such situations.

So I turn to humor instead. :)

Sadly though, some people still don't "get it" and become offended anyway. :(

Ah well. Whatcha gonna do?

Hi,
Post by Jagadishan Perumal ***@yahoo.com [hercules-390]
I was able to set CTC connection, Install CTCI-W32 and winpcap.
When I try to do ftp from DOS.
it just gives me ftp>
When I try to do ftp using ftpzilla, I get connection refused from mainframe IP.
Is there anything I need to check ?
You might want to try running 'TT32Test.exe/TT64Test.exe/TTTest.exe'
(whichever applies), which ' ... provides a means of verifying that both
CTCI-WIN and WinPCap have both been properly installed and are thus ready
to provide the networking connectivity needs for your Hercules guest'.

My own shot in the dark "psychic" guess would be Windows Firewall.

Did you perform a CTCI-WIN TTTest "Ping Test" as instructed in CTCI-WIN's Help file? (Note: be sure Hercules is NOT running when you do this!)

If you cannot ping to/from your guest from both your Windows host as well as from some other workstation (system) on your local network, then you are wasting your (and our) time trying to get Hercules to work.

ONLY after you have confirmed proper CTCI-WIN <--> Hercules networking functionality should you then attempt to configure and test your Hercules and guest's networking.

This is all mentioned in the CTCI-WIN Help file.
