Hi Paolo,

Have you connected a 3270 emulator? In your hercules config file there will
be line like:

CNSLPORT 3270

which tells you what port (in this example it's port 3270) to connect to.
Connect your emulator that port (not port 23).

Hope this helps. If it doesn't, please post your hercules config file.

Cheers,
Peter

You need to set the IPL Parms correctly. You can find the
instructions for each step of the IPL process, including what to set
the IPL parameters to
on the quick install sheet that came with your distribution.

only causes confusion later. Unless you
have a real need to use strange ports,
don't do it.

What console is 120..... ?
Is the truncated 3 digits of 4 in you
configuration file?

You should ask a VM group, but I believe
that the format is something like:
LOADPARM CNSL0120
But since you don't have a 120 CRT, it won't
work anyway.

Make certain that you TN3270 connect to
the non-existent CRT before you attempt IPL.

Yes, the Hercules window itself will assume this function.

BTW, i have seen no DASD addr speficications in your config file ....

PS: you should know your starter system i/o config and code it into the
hercules config file, shouldn't you ??

Hi Paolo,
Have you connected a 3270 emulator? In your hercules config
file
Post by Paul Raulerson
Post by notturnove
there will
Post by Peter Vels
CNSLPORT 3270
which tells you what port (in this example it's port 3270) to
connect to.
Post by Peter Vels
Connect your emulator that port (not port 23).
Hope this helps. If it doesn't, please post your hercules

Everything I have been reading about Hercules indicates that the SYSG console is not supported by Hercules. the SYSC is but not the SYSG.
If that is the case the DVD install of z/VM could not be done currently. the CD install (which is being discontinued in z/VM 5.2 I believe) supports the use of LOADPARM CNSLxxxx to tell it your installation console. the DVD is much different. it's not a DDR restore process as is the Tape/CDROM method

the DVD also has higher memory requirements. a Tape install needs about 64meg to get going whereas a DVD is 512meg most of this is used as a started system which is loaded into memory unlike the DDR method. Its that starter system (a mini VM system) that doesn't know about anything except SYSG console.

Setting your IPL PARMS will do no good far as I know since they will not be used by the starter system

That's my understanding of the topic anyways.

i tryed a lot of test using loadparm to pass console address , but
the problem reoccurs.
I suppose that iplled module (zVM DVD installation module) works
only with Integrated 3270 Console of HMC.
can hercules emulate the Integrate 3270 Console of HMC ?
Yes, the Hercules window itself will assume this function.

BTW, i have seen no DASD addr speficications in your config file ....

PS: you should know your starter system i/o config and code it into the
hercules config file, shouldn't you ??

Connect a 3270 emulator to the console port and it should work. Don't
know for sure, I don't have a license for that, but I see no reason
why it would not.

It shouldn't work because the SYSG console (Integrated 3270 Console) isn't the same as a console port or the Console Messages used to install Linux.
SYSG is not part of an I/O gen. it's a function provided by the HMC itself, even at an real HMC without the SYSG console up you can not load from the DVD or even FTP due to the missing SYSG console. So I can see a very valid reason why it would not work.

Hi Doug,

I agree with you , Hercules probably does'n support output directed
to HMC Integrated 3270 Console.

I made many tests, but the results are always the same:
DISABLE WAIT PSW=00020000 00000000 0000000000001010

The format of the disabled wait state PSW is shown below:
xxxxyyyy zzzzwwww
where:
xxxx 000A - a disabled wait state
yyyy 0000
zzzz 0000
wwww
is the disabled wait state code. This disabled wait state code is a
CP message number
HCP1010W NO CONSOLE AVAILABLE.

Thanks for all !

It seems really strange that VM can
no longer run in an LPAR or under VM.
If every copy of VM really did require
a specific type of hardware console
built into the mainframe, that would
be the result. Will VM ever be able
to have a second CRT again that can
be used as a console?

I suggest that the problem is you
need to use a valid CRT that can be
used to IPL and point to it properly.

If there are really no valid CRTs
to use as a console, then you should
disable them and use SYSC which your
post shows is working.

Actually, I am seriously beginning to wonder if this is a troll.
(*sigh*) Hercules is just too fine a product to have this kind of
stuff aimed at it. The current z/VM, like all z/VM's since 4.4, can
use the hardware console to load itself from DVD or CD ROM, and uses
the loadparms to determine the consoles. It also runs just fine as a
second level guest OS.

I begin to think this person does not have the manual or quicksetup
instructions.

This all only applies to the installation of z/VM using the DVD source media.
If you where to use either the Tapes or CDROM media you could use the SYSC console and you would be fine.
If you already have a z/VM 5.1 system up, you can install from the DVD as a second level VM using FTP from a server with the DVD.
in this case you use DVDPRIME from maints 2CC disk.

the DVD install as a first level only uses the SYSG console, it does not recognize the SYSC console.
I've tried that now on a real HMC by not starting the Integrated 3270 (SYSG) and specifying a loadparm of SYSC.
I've also specified a loadparm of my real console 1E00 and neither works at a real HMC. only starting the SYSG console
seems to work. Again using the DVD media.

Once installed you can set your LOADPARM to DASDCONS (I,e, 48C51E00 for 48C5 Dasd address and 1E00 console)
and it works fine.

starting the Integrated 3270 (SYSG) and
specifying a loadparm of SYSC.
I've also specified a loadparm of my
real console 1E00 and neither works at
a real HMC. only starting the SYSG console
seems to work. Again using the DVD media.
Once installed you can set your LOADPARM
to DASDCONS (I,e, 48C51E00 for 48C5 Dasd
address and 1E00 console) and it works fine.

It seems really strange that VM can
no longer run in an LPAR or under VM.
If every copy of VM really did require
a specific type of hardware console
built into the mainframe, that would
be the result. Will VM ever be able
to have a second CRT again that can
be used as a console?
I suggest that the problem is you
need to use a valid CRT that can be
used to IPL and point to it properly.
If there are really no valid CRTs
to use as a console, then you should
disable them and use SYSC which your
post shows is working.

Everything I have been reading about
Hercules indicates that the SYSG
console is not supported by Hercules.
the SYSC is but not the SYSG.
If that is the case the DVD install
of z/VM could not be done currently.
the CD install (which is being
discontinued in z/VM 5.2 I believe)
supports the use of LOADPARM CNSLxxxx
to tell it your installation console.
the DVD is much different. it's not
a DDR restore process as is the
Tape/CDROM method
the DVD also has higher memory
requirements. a Tape install needs
about 64meg to get going whereas a
DVD is 512meg most of this is used
as a started system which is loaded
into memory unlike the DDR method.
Its that starter system (a mini VM
system) that doesn't know about
anything except SYSG console.
Setting your IPL PARMS will do no
good far as I know since they will
not be used by the starter system
That's my understanding of the topic anyways.

What means: LOADPARM 120..... ?
LOADPARM xxxxxxxx specifies the eight-character IPL parameter which
is used by some operating systems to select system parameters.

The value of LOADPARM is meaningful for OS that read it.
The z/VM installation module doesn't seem to use it.
I test it many times, but no results.

How does "HCP1010W NO CONSOLE AVAILABLE."
say to recover in the messages manual?
(Pay attention, z/VM V5.1 installation doesn't use SAPL program.)

HCP1010W NO CONSOLE AVAILABLE.
Explanation: The indicated disabled wait state PSW is
loaded when an operational primary or alternate
operator's console cannot be found.
If you were running in virtual mode, CONMODE was not
set to 3270.
System Action: The system enters a disabled wait
state (wait state code = 1010). If using the Stand-Alone
Program Loader (SAPL), all registers contain the values
held at the time the wait state was entered. Register 2
contains the console device address.
Operator Response: There is probably a hardware
malfunction. Notify your system support personnel.
Verify that the RIOGEN macro instruction properly
defined the primary and alternate system consoles.
If you were running in virtual mode, enter the TERMinal
CONMODE 3270 command, and re-IPL.
If using SAPL, either specify the correct console
address on the LOADPARM parameter of the IPL
command or specify the correct console address using
the 'CONS=' IPL parameter on the SAPL menu screen.
See the section, "Overriding Stand-Alone Program
Defaults" in the z/VM: CP Planning and Administration.
You can also use the CONSxxxx load parameter to
cause SAPL to pass CONS=xxxx as an IPL parameter
to CP. Refer to z/VM: CP Planning and Administration
for a description of the 'CONS=' IPL parameter.
If the problem persists, contact your IBM Support
Center personnel to diagnose and correct the hardware
error.

Correct, once z/VM is installed but this is not about IPL'ing z/VM as a functional system.
this is about IPLing z/VM from the DVD to perform an install and in that case LOADPARM is ignored.

Why the weird port? You will have to

Hi Somitcw,

This is the procedure to install z/VM from HMC.
You can verify that IBM doesn't suggested other method to follow.
(no alternate console to Integrated 3270 Console).

I indicate console address 001F because normally z/VM use 0009 or
001F as default console addresses.
I tried this addresses as alternative to the following procedure
that indicate to use Integrated 3270 Console (SYSG) only.
I didn't know if installation module use this address (now i think
no !).

Normally VM console specified must accept 3270 CCWs and data streams
and have at least 20 lines and 80 columns, so i use 3270 display.

The file 510VM.INS is a pointer to 2 modules and i think that it is
not easy to identify the real I/O block.

Booting z/VM from DVD

This section explains how to install z/VM 5.1 from an HMC with a DVD-
ROM onto 3390-3 direct access storage devices (DASD). For
alternative configurations, such as installing from tape or onto
SCSI disks, refer to the z/VM documentation.

1. On the Hardware Management Console, select the LPAR on which you
want to install z/VM.
2. In the CPC Recovery menu, double-click Integrated 3270 Console as
shown at the
bottom of Figure 4-1. A Personal Communications emulator session
opens.
3. Place the z/VM DVD Product Package 3390 in the HMC DVD drive.
4. Change to the Single Object Operations mode. To access this mode,
perform the following steps:
a. In the Groups Work Area, double-click Defined CPCs.
b. Select your CPC.
c. Go around the racetrack (the series of buttons with circular
arrows in the bottom right corner) to the CPC Recovery menu.
d. Double-click the Single Object Operations icon. Click Yes to
establish a session with your CPC.
e. The Primary Support Element Workplace window opens as a
subwindow (a window within a window). Double-click Groups near the
top of this window.
f. Back in the Groups Work Area, double-click Images.
g. Select the LPAR into which z/VM will be installed.
h. Go to the CPC Recovery menu. Again you can do this by using the
racetrack.
i. Double-click the Load from CD-ROM or Server icon (Figure 4-2)
when you see it.
j. Click Yes to confirm that you want to load from the CD-ROM.

5. In the Load CD-ROM or Server window (Figure 4-3), complete these
tasks:
a. Select the Hardware Management Console CD-ROM option.
b. For File location, type the value /cpdvd. This is the directory
on the DVD with the z/VM
c. Click Continue.

6. Load the RAMDISK.
a. From the Load from CD-ROM or Server panel, select the software
510vm.ins. Click Continue.
b. From the Confirm the action window, click Yes.
c. You should see the Load from CD-ROM or Server Progress window.
d. When you see the Completed successfully message, click OK to
close. The loading of z/VM should take four to eight minutes.

Right and the two files are

VM510NUC 0x00000000
VM510RAM 0x01000000

VM510NUC is the nucleus itself, VM510RAM is a mini install system's minidisks. enough to continue the installation with basic CP command support. Not sure but I would imagine CMS as well.

I think we have some misunderstanding of what's going on here among posters, as notturnove originally stated, this is a DVD install so
when we talk about SYSG and the 510VM.ins we are installing from DVD not Tape or CDROM which is the normal DDR process with SAPL. something Hercules would support because SYSC or a normal console would work.
The DVD install was designed by IBM to allow VM installation without the need for a 3174 or 2074 controller thus eliminating Costs of having such controllers.

This is not a system that is installed yet to honor the LOADPARM and I think some posters may think we're talking about an installed system

on a side note, according to a talk I had just this week with the IBM they are eliminating the CDROM install and the DVD will be the default media type for z/VM soon. This is because just as my company did, we got the tapes, and our external tape access is not on an CEC that had access to tape.
so we requested the DVD media. IBM said that's become such a common request that they will be changing the default media.

Please be carefull here with this statement.
From "VM Messages and Codes for CP" book: (Pay attention, z/VM V5.1
installation doesn't use SAPL program.)
It should say "(Pay attention, z/VM V5.1 DVD installation doesn't use SAPL
program.)"
Tape and CDROM installations do use SAPL but are not whats being discussed
here
Have you tried having a console sitting around that matches an address in
the loadparm ? Not sure how to do this under the current configuration.
Don't know have many time this can be said.
The z/VM DVD installation DOES NOT use the LOADPARM setting, it does
nothing. on a Real HMC so Hercules should do nothing as well and it doesn't
LOADPARM is passed to the IPL'd system and in this case LOADPARM is ignored.
Again, this only aplies to the z/VM DVD installation.

I did some checking and what the SYSG console is and it is a SCLP based 3270
console. I believe SCLP is implemented in hercules but not to handle a 3270
data stream. I suspect that is why you see the "HHCCP041I SYSCONS interface
active message." Your have the OS trying to contact the HMC over SCLP,
hercules see's the attempt and actives the SYSCONS interface, but then
recieves a 3270 data stream which it doesn't know what to do with and since
the VM starter system is expecting the correct reply that it doesn't get you
see the Disabled Wait 1010 message.

qouting from a z990 features datasheet
To eliminate the need for an external 2074 Console controller and associated
consoles, an administrator may utilize the Hardware Management Console (HMC)
functions "Integrated 3270 Console Support" for operating z/VM images, and
"Integrated ASCII Console Support" to operate Linux images. The support is
implemented using an internal communications method - SCLP - which enables
the operating system to communicate with the HMC. The software support was
made available in z/VM Version 4 Release 4. An update for Linux will be made
available to IBM Linux Distribution Partners.

Baloney.
This forum isn't just for experts. Questions are welcome, and this one has
exposed a hole in what Hercules emulates. I don't know how it would be
resolved, either, but the hole is definitely there. There are two aspects to
the problem:

1) How does the SYSG console actually work? Does the system communicaate
with it the same way as it does the SYSC console, except that it uses a 3270
datastream, or is it more complex than that?

2) How do we emulate the functionality? Once we figure out how to look like
a SYSG console to the software running on Hercules, how do we get that data
to the user? Do we define a parameter that makes the first tn3270 connection
connect to the emulated SYSG console, or do we assign a second port, or...?

Hopefully, we can get you going. At this point, though, if the z/VM 5.1 DVD
installer only talks to the SYSG console (as appears to be the case), then
we're not going to be able to help you much until we figure out how to do
the SYSG console.

(I assume in this discussion that you have the appropriate license to run
z/VM 5.1 on Hercules.)

Hi Jay,

Thanks for chiming in here and giving your feedback

FWIW: in the Linux 2.6 OS, SLES9 for example is an ASCII implementation (i.e. Integrated Console for Linux) of SYSG to allow Linux to talk to the console.
It might be of some help in your implementing the SYSG console. it won't be the 3270 version but I looked at the source tree briefly and it definitely implement the SCLP stuff.

maybe it would help???

Thanks again

Now i'm very happy to have the opporunity to reuse VM.

But just how much are you willing to spend time on? For example, the IBM
43x1 processors had integrated 3278 consoles at an address of 0Fx. This
presents a minor(!) problem - Hercules setup allows generating/defining
a 327x session on the 0Fx addresses, but there is no provision for
providing screen wrap-around at the end of line 20, and displaying
system info on 21-24. Similarly, the 3033 had integrated CRTs. And for a
real support effort, try the 360/165 console with its odd screen size
(80*35, if I recall correctly). And yes, I do have EXCP code to support
the device in some of my programs.....

Gerhard Postpischil
Bradford, VT

P.S. What I'd really like as a change for HercGUI and Hercules is list
input in the device definitions (e.g., @INCLUDE diskfarm). When you have
multiple configuration files, it's easy to get discrepancies in the
disks (e.g., deleting shadow files on one, but forgetting on another).

This forum isn't just for experts. Questions are welcome, and this one has
exposed a hole in what Hercules emulates. I don't know how it would be
resolved, either, but the hole is definitely there. There are two aspects to
1) How does the SYSG console actually work? Does the system communicaate
with it the same way as it does the SYSC console, except that it uses a 3270
datastream, or is it more complex than that?
2) How do we emulate the functionality? Once we figure out how to look like
a SYSG console to the software running on Hercules, how do we get that data
to the user? Do we define a parameter that makes the first tn3270 connection
connect to the emulated SYSG console, or do we assign a second port, or...?

Hopefully, we can get you going.
At this point, though, if the z/VM 5.1
DVD installer only talks to the SYSG
console (as appears to be the case),
then we're not going to be able to
help you much until we figure out how
to do the SYSG console.

At this point, wouldn't it be better
to disable SYSC so it stops pretending
to be SYSG. Perhaps a normal console
could then be used.

I use vm 4.3 and 4.4 with Hercules and all works fine.
The problem described, occurs only when i try to install z/VM v5.1
from DVD.

Have you tried having a console sitting
around that matches an address in the
loadparm ? Not sure how to do this under
the current configuration.
CNSLPORT 3270
Why the weird port? You will have to
override the port number in your TN3270
client.

LOADPARM CONSSYSC , CONSSYSG , CONS001F
What is a proper console address for
the system you are IPLing? I would
expect something like CONS0000 or CONS0009
but you should use what IBM says.

001F 3270
Where did 001F come from. Is it a
3215 in you system or 3270?
Post by Peter Vels
I opened x3270 with address 127.0.0.1
port 3270 and i saw the connection
logged in Hercules console.
Then I iplled the system from DVD,
(IPL /CDROM/CPDVD/510VM.INS) but it
didn't work, always disable wait 1010.
Probably a bad console address or
type. If IBM did not give you a list
of the system configuration, try to
browse 510VM.INS for anything that
looks like a real I/O block.
