Perhaps some of you have already come across this in your travels online, but I found it fascinating. Folks of my vintage should get a real kick out of it!

What he was able to accomplish was amazing!

Hi,

Although I'm too young to remember the (OS/)360, I read this and loved it
anyway. Made me think of this story, where a teenager got an old(-er) IBM
Mainframe.

The laptops are still there; this machine could probably be brought
up. If anyone chases this, I can likely help get it running. (I got
mine running..)

Saw that. Thinking about it
but it would mean a trip down to So Cal. ;-)
Wondering how hard it would be to get in/out of my pickup truck (it can
certainly
handle the weight)
would rather do a 6hr drive in that vs a large rental
truck.
I would strongly recommend a lift gate, and some help. The seller's
estimate of 1600lbs is, in my opinion (having moved a couple)
optimistic. I would guess closer to an even ton.

It's possible to de-populate the rack to move it (that's what Connor
did to move his) but it's not easy, as it's by no means the standard
sort of rack configuration that people like us (DEC, etc) are used to.
That ain't 19"! ;)

That said, though, I would encourage you to grab this. They're nice
machines, and not all that power-hungry in the grand scheme of things.
Assuming the drives in the laptops are intact, it shouldn't be tough to
get it running.

Hi,

Thanks for pointing that one out ! (I cant believe that even things like
that are on eBay). But I think ill have to pass: even if I could overcome
all the 'ifs' going through my mind right now (too heavy to place on my 3th
floor apartment, apartment too small to store it, 'local pickup only' so
how am I going to get it here, not even nearly enough experience to get it
running, etc.), I simply do not have the time/energy right now to take on
what for me would be an enormous hobby project. I mean I've been meaning to
do some more stuff with the hercules/hyperion emulator and the various TK-
and x-packs, and I don't even get around to doing that, let alone the real
thing.
;)

Oh and a minor note: looking at the pictures, isn't the frame slightly
damaged and/or bent out of shape ?

If we could get 50-100 or more people interested, I'd be willing to
chip in $25-$50 towards a "group buy".

Dave McGuire's museum seems like it would be a good "home"

Maybe the vintage computer forums is a good place to seek out interest
for a group buy ?

http://www.vcfed.org/forum/forum.php

Or even a kickstarter project ?

The biggest issue is whether or not it will actually be runnable,
(seller says it was "Booted up 3 months ago. Working"

You might think if he was knowledgeable he would have said "IPL'd",
and /or provided more details.

Are you kidding? Anything you can think of, up to and including
decommissioned military submarines, has been sold on eBay.
Remember, eBay isn't just about random crap out of Aunt Edna's basement.
Well I must admit I never really looked at eBay, either for buying or
selling (yes, really) so I wouldn't know. So forgive me the response, but:
military submarines ? My mind boggles.

That's not the frame, that's the front door. It's just cosmetic. A
good car body shop can fix it. There's no bending one of those frames.
Thanks for pointing that out. Since my daytime job was a Unix admin, I
never really looked at these systems, even though they had them in the data
center I used to work. Those were the systems I ran by to do whatever it
was that needed doing on the Unix systems ;) . Now I think of it, there
even used to be a powered-down Amdahl system sitting in the corner
collecting dust, for which I never did found the time for to take a good
look at (or take pictures). Then one day, it was gone. I never did figure
out what happened to it. Perhaps they sold it on eBay ;).
