[hercules-390] LOADING Binary data file into VM370 issue

I attempted to load mike Noel's Kick arc file into VM370 with X3270 emulator and noticed that there is no IND$FILE on VM370 so I am contemplating putting the arc file on an aws tape and feeding it into vm370; but I thought I ask others if there is a better way first. I seem to have three choices

1 - load the arc file into MVS and write it to tape there; but I am not sure if VM370 can read a MVS tape.
2 - write a awsmake program which I have started on to put the binary file on an aws tape on pc.
3 - modify my variation of Jason Paul Winter style code to transfer file through Hercules to VM370 buffer.
4 - There is also an option of transfer file through screen buffer which ind$file does but I am not familiar with.

so I have cometh to tee the wise to seek enlightenment.

You could try OMA instead of AWS. You create a xxxx.tdf file that is mounted to an OMA tape device. I've never used this so I don't know if it will work. Flex-es has documented the version of TDF files they support. http://support.funsoft.com/flexman/fsims100-faketape10-fsi-007-000-010-003.html

I found out that there is a Mecaff Console.zip file that seems to have the IND$FILE that Dave mentioned in his post.  I am going to give it a try first.   thanks for your suggestions.

TDF may work, but I haven’t tried it in a long time.

You can load it through the card reader.

If you have it on an OS disk you can mount that disk on VM and CMS can read it.

As I said elsewhere this is a VM question. Ind$file from NICOF will work. Use the H390-VM group for support.

Subject: Re: [hercules-390] LOADING Binary data file into VM370 issue

You could try OMA instead of AWS. You create a xxxx.tdf file that is mounted to an OMA tape device. I've never used this so I don't know if it will work. Flex-es has documented the version of TDF files they support. <http://support.funsoft.com/flexman/fsims100-faketape10-fsi-007-000-010-003.html> http://support.funsoft.com/flexman/fsims100-faketape10-fsi-007-000-010-003.html

I found the files Paul Edwards mentioned
in vm380; but I have to figure out how to
combine vm380 with vm370.
The VM/370 Sixpack *is* (now) VM/380,
there is no separate distribution anymore.

So just point VM380 to wherever your
VM/370 installation is.

As far as I can remember, the putcms.bat
etc scripts are not reliant on Hercules/380
(which has enhanced OMA tape
capability).

Rahim,

Because there are different variants of VM Sixpack out there, as well as the 5-pack (VMDIST) distribution, these systems are usually at slightly different maintenance levels. The file you need, DMKGRF HRC370DK, can be found on file 3 of the .aws tape containing the DIAG58 materials. File 3 exists solely to contain additional maintenance that DIAG58 itself does not require but that might be missing on some systems thereby preventing successful assemblies during the DIAG58 install.

Regards,
Bob

I attempted to load mike Noel's Kick arc
file into VM370
FWIW, the VM/370 sixpack comes with
the following scripts:

C:\vm380>putcms
usage: putcms <files> [binary]
C:\vm380>restmini
Usage example: restmini disk.vmarc 291
C:\vm380>

which may be good enough to do
what you want.

Otherwise I suggest you ask Noel
directly what he suggests, in either
the H390-VM group or his kicks
for TSO group.

I just tried those commands under Maint.
Ready; T=0.01/0.04 02:01:18

putcms
Unknown CP/CMS command
restmini
Unknown CP/CMS command

I am using Sixpack; but I will try to install a fresh version to be sure that nothing got whipped out.

The commands I gave you are Windows
batch files, not CMS commands. The
batch files expect VM to be shut down
when you execute them.

In addition, as per batch/Batch.txt
you need to move the batch files
one level up, and also you need
to set the VM380 environment
variable.
