I recently acquired a Dell R710 that shows 24 CPU's. I tried setting my HERC.CONF file to use 18 as the MAXCPU setting. However, Hercules fails to start saying invalid MAXCPU setting. I kept dropping the setting until I got 8 to work. I am using 3.11 prebuilt for Windows on Windows Server 2008 R2. I saw some reference that error could be caused by the setting for MAX_CPU_ENGINES and that to change it you have rebuild. I'd like to find out the default setting for the prebuilt 3.11 Windows code if I could. Thanks

My assumption is it was compiled with the max cpu engines set to 8. I am not a windows user, but when I start Hercules it shows me the max cpu engines allowed. If it shows 8 in the log when first started, you will need to compile from source with a higher setting.

Thanks. I'll look into trying that.

Won't there be a law of diminishing returns emulating colossal numbers
of CPUs?

I'm sure I remember being told that each time another CPU is added (to
real hardware)
the OS spends even more time/effort co-ordinating the multiple CPUs'
activities. I'd
have thought that in an emulator that would be true too.

There might be but I'd like to play around with it a bit to see.

Eh, with 24 CPU's, forget Hercules, try the "GooseBerry" (render)
challenge ! ;) :

Ya, it's still just "processing numbers", but (for me) a more
interesting result ;)
