I installed latest versions of Hercules and Hercgui

In my conf file
0E22-0E23 LCS 192.168.1.116 -m B0-83-FE-B4-1B-AE -n 192.168.1.28
At hercgui start up

16:50:04.637 00005B78 HHC04100I TunTap64.dll version ** UNPAID TRIAL COPY ** 3.3.3.3285 initiated
16:50:04.744 00005B78 HHC00901I 0:0E22 LCS: interface tap0, type TAP opened
When I try to ping 192.168.1.116 it never works.

Please say me what I did wrong.

The most important thing you did wrong was to not provide *nearly* enough information to make even an educated *guess* as to where things might be going wrong.

HI FISH

My question should have been

Here is my conf file. 0E22-0E23 LCS 192.168.1.116 -m B0-83-FE-B4-1B-AE -n 192.168.1.28

At startup Hercgui says “ there is no error ” but I can’t ping 192.168.1.116 .

As I don’t know how TUNTAP works and which information it uses I have no idea of the information necessary to fix the problem.

I need help.

Has your guest completed initialization of its TCP/IP stack? What guest o/s are you using? May we see its TCP/IP configuration? Where are you pinging from? The same Windows system that Hercules and CTCI-WIN are running on? Have you tried pinging your guest from a different LAN station? (i.e. *not* the one running Hercules) Does that work? Have you verified proper CTCI-WIN installation per the "Confirming Proper Installation" chapter of the Help file provided with CTCI-WIN? (i.e. have you performed a TT64Test ping test in both directions from the same system that TT64Test is running on *as well as* from a completely different LAN station?) What flavor of Windows are you running? (Windows 7? Windows 8? Windows 10? Windows Server? Etc) Have you reviewed the "Common Problems" chapter of the Help file? Do any of them apply to your situation? It appears (based on the Hercules message numbers you posted earlier) that you are using a 4.0 Hyperion version of Hercules. Which Hyperion version are you using? May we see your complete Hercules (HercGUI) log file? (from beginning to end! The initial startup messages are particularly important!) Does message HHC00942I appear anywhere in your log file? How about message HHC00943W? Or HHC00018I? (Or HHC00018W?)

Without answers to at least *some* of these questions it's rather difficult to even *guess* what your problem might be.

Have you even read AT ALL the "Problem Reporting" chapter of the Help file??

Before we can help you Millon, you need to first help us. Simply saying "Hercules isn't working! What am I doing wrong?" (almost!) isn't very helpful.

Providing more information than needed is rarely harmful, but not providing enough almost always is.

You can do better than this, Millon.

Please try again.

Hi David

Thank you for your help.

My confusion comes from the fact that until now when I got a TUN/TAP problem each time I got a message at Hercgui startup sayin tuntap can’t be opened.

And I thought that at this point all work was done.

I ran TT64TEST and I just received a file which is attached here.

I did not find "Confirming Proper Installation" chapter .

I did not find “common problems” chapter. I think I don’t read the right document.

I try to ping on the micro running hercgui and on another one result is the same NO PING.

The guest is Z/OS a copy of TCPIP PARMS is attached.

I run Windows 7.

I find a HHc00942I message.

I find a hhC00018I message.

The Hercules version is Hercules version 4.00.0.8243-gf4bf8ff.

Hello!
Um, this list does not allow attachments. The list server methods
stripped it. Can you find a different method of delivery to the (big)
fish?

Yes Fish, that's you I'm thinking of there.

At startup Hercgui says “ there is no error ” but I
can’t ping 192.168.1.116 .

Hello!
I beg your pardon?
Louis, please use nickname, we do not refer to him by his first name
because there are plenty out there.

Louis

Louis,

I took a quick look at what you posted and here are some comments.

As usual, Fish is correct. You did not post enough information to help us help you.

Start off with these beginning steps and that might help you get started:

1. In the TCPIP parm file your host is defined as: 192.168.1.115 but you say you are pinging 192.168.1.116

2. That will never work J. Also that does not match your LCS configuration.

In the begin route section the only active route is:

ROUTE 10.26.14.0 255.255.255.0 = ETH1 MTU 1492

I don’t know if that will stop from you pinging from the local host to the local guest, Fish can probably tell you from memory, but that is certainly incorrect for getting to the outside world.

Proper information we need to help you is.

Complete TCPIP configuration of your home network

1. subnet mask

2. gateway address

3. do you use a router or are you a single computer if yes. address of router

4. How many computers on your network (more than 1 ?)

Latest TCPIP parm file.

Going forward we will probably need other TCPIP configuration files if you want to get FTP and 3270 working

Good Luck

My confusion comes from the fact that until now when
I got a TUN/TAP problem each time I got a message at
Hercgui startup sayin tuntap can’t be opened.
And I thought that at this point all work was done.
I understand your confusion. However, just because your tap (LCS) device was opened (successfully started) does not necessarily mean everything is okay. It may have been opened (started) with the wrong parameters for example (which incidentally is your particular situation).

I ran TT64TEST and I just received a file which is attached here.
You ran the program TT32Test yes, but you did not actually run a test. All you did was start the program and then exit. You did not use it to actually run a test as instructed by the "Confirming Proper Installation" chapter of the CTCI-WIN Help file.

I did not find "Confirming Proper Installation" chapter .
I did not find “common problems” chapter. I think I don’t
read the right document.
Start --> All Programs --> SoftDevLabs --> CTCI-WIN --> CTCI-WIN Help.

According to your TT32Test output you are using CTCI-WIN version 3.3.3.3285 which *does* include a Help file. I checked, and both chapters are there. Please read them.

To help you, here is the text of the "Confirming Proper Installation" chapter:

The 'TT64Test' program included as part of the installation
package is designed to simulate a running Hercules instance
(in a manner of speaking), thereby allowing you to verify
CTCI-WIN is properly installed and working correctly without
having to bring up Hercules first. (TT64Test is much faster
and easier than IPLing and configuring a guest operating
system under Hercules.)

First, start the TT64Test program and verify there are no ERROR
or WARNING messages displayed. If any error or warning messages
are displayed, then you need to resolve them (fix them) before
proceeding.

If there are no errors/warnings, then select 'Start' from
the 'Test' menu, and fill in the dialog with the same values
as you plan to use for your guest, and then click OK to start
the test.

While the test is running, open a Command-Prompt window on
any workstation in your local network and 'ping' the IP address
of your "Hercules guest". You should get a response. If you
do not get a good response then something is wrong and needs
to be fixed before continuing.

If you get a good response from your pings, then you should
next perform a ping test in the opposite direction: from TT64Test
to your other systems. Select "Ping someone" from the 'Test'
menu and fill in your desired ping values and click OK. TT64Test
should receive a response from each ping it sends out.

If pings from both directions work okay (from TT64Test to somewhere
else, and from somewhere else to TT64Test), then CTCI-WIN is
installed properly and functioning correctly.

If CTCI-WIN is installed correctly and functioning properly but
your guest running under Hercules is still not working, then it's
not the fault of CTCI-WIN. Either your guest networking configuration
or your Hercules configuration (or both) are bad. Ask the MVS
support group or the Hercules support group for help.

I try to ping on the micro running hercgui and on another
one result is the same NO PING.
The guest is Z/OS a copy of TCPIP PARMS is attached.
I run Windows 7.
I find a HHc00942I message.
I find a hhC00018I message.
The Hercules version is Hercules version 4.00.0.8243-gf4bf8ff.

After reviewing the information you provided I can see several things which are wrong. The two most egregious errors Roc has already identified in his reply:

1. The guest IP address specified on your Hercules device
statement does not match your guest's IP address that
you specified in your TCPIP PROFILE.

2. Your TCPIP PROFILE does not specify a proper default
route.

Additionally, you are specifying a custom MAC address for your guest's adapter/interface on your Hercules device statement ('-m' parameter) which is identical to your Windows host's adapter. That too is a rather serious error. All adapters on any given network segment MUST have unique hardware addresses (MAC addresses). If they don't (if any have the same as another) then networking will NOT function properly (bad things will happen).

I hope this helps you.

Hi Fish

I want to thank you and Roc for your help.

Roc find the problem in my TCPIP profile, and you spent time to explain me some operations.

I think now I understand a little bit how TUN/TAP works.

I hope next time my first message will be more complete and usable.

Louis

PS: It works

My confusion comes from the fact that until now when
I got a TUN/TAP problem each time I got a message at
Hercgui startup sayin tuntap can’t be opened.
And I thought that at this point all work was done.

2. Your TCPIP PROFILE does not specify a proper

I.e. a default gateway.

Try sepparating members of mac address with : instead of -

See if that helps.

HI FISH

My question should have been

Here is my conf file. 0E22-0E23 LCS 192.168.1.116 -m B0-83-FE-B4-1B-AE -n 192.168.1.28

At startup Hercgui says “ there is no error ” but I can’t ping 192.168.1.116 .

As I don’t know how TUNTAP works and which information it uses I have no idea of the information necessary to fix the problem.

I need help.

Louis

I installed latest versions of Hercules and Hercgui
In my conf file
0E22-0E23 LCS 192.168.1.116 -m B0-83-FE-B4-1B-AE -n 192.168.1.28
At hercgui start up
16:50:04.637 00005B78 HHC04100I TunTap64.dll version ** UNPAID TRIAL
COPY ** 3.3.3.3285 initiated
16:50:04.744 00005B78 HHC00901I 0:0E22 LCS: interface tap0, type TAP
opened
When I try to ping 192.168.1.116 it never works.
Please say me what I did wrong.
The most important thing you did wrong was to not provide *nearly* enough information to make even an educated *guess* as to where things might be going wrong.
