Good Afternoon,

Following the CTCI-W32 configuration guide, I can only ping between Hercules and Windows. I am unable to ping anywhere else, and nothing is able to ping Hercules from a different computer.

When I ping from a different computer, I get:

Pinging 192.168.1.110 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.69: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 192.168.1.69: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 192.168.1.69: Destination host unreachable.
Reply from 192.168.1.69: Destination host unreachable.

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.110:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

I have IP forwarding enabled, and a route configured on Windows. How can I get Hercules connected?

You need to route at the "different computer".

You need to route at the "different computer".
If he's followed the instructions in the CTCI-WIN Help file (PRESUMING he's using the most current version; he might not be; he didn't provide enough information!) then he shouldn't need ANY routes. He also shouldn't need IP Forwarding either.

If, however, he has a valid reason for enabling IP Forwarding (I don't know of any) and for defining custom route(s) (ditto), then he, by definition, "knows what he's doing" and should be able to figure things out for himself without bothering us with a poorly written Problem Report that doesn't contain *nearly* enough information to make any type of guess as to what might be wrong.

I hate it when people say "Help! Hercules isn't working for me!" and expect us to somehow magically know what's wrong without them providing any information to go on. :(

To accomplish anything further, it would be necessary to have a default route, a capability which does not exist on the MVS side.  ie:  route add default gw 192.168.1.254 eth0

Okay so I uninstalled everything and followed the configuration guide here:
http://hercules390.996247.n3.nabble.com/Installing-CTCI-WIN-formerly-CTCI-W32-on-Windows-x64-td22952.html http://hercules390.996247.n3.nabble.com/Installing-CTCI-WIN-formerly-CTCI-W32-on-Windows-x64-td22952.html

I still get the same thing. I can ping my computer to TT64Test and it can ping my computer, but I can't reach anything else.

What information do yall need, by the way? I apologize for not giving any, thats for sure!

What information do yall need, by the way?
A TT64Test report would be a good start. Refer to the "Problem Reporting" chapter of the Help file for the complete list of the minimum information needed.

For your benefit and the benefit of others, please remember the Golden Rule of Problem Reporting: it rarely hurts to provide more information than needed but almost always hurts to not provide enough.

Where are you pinging from?
From local Windows system to TT64

The same Windows system that Hercules and CTCI-WIN are running on?
Yes

Have you tried pinging your guest from a different LAN station? (i.e. *not* the one running Hercules) Does that work?
Yes, I get destination host unreachable.

Have you verified proper CTCI-WIN installation per the "Confirming Proper Installation" chapter of the Help file provided with CTCI-WIN? (i.e. have you performed a TT64Test ping test in both directions from the same system that TT64Test is running on *as well as* from a completely different LAN station?)
That is what I am stuck at, I can ping both directions on the same system but not anywhere else.

What flavor of Windows are you running? (Windows 7? Windows 8? Windows 10? Windows Server? Etc)
Windows 10

Have you reviewed the "Common Problems" chapter of the Help file?
I think so, is it this?:
http://www.bsp-gmbh.com/hercules/wingui/ctci-w32-faq.html

Do any of them apply to your situation?
No.

Have you reviewed the "Common Problems" chapter of
the Help file?
http://www.bsp-gmbh.com/hercules/wingui/ctci-w32-faq.html
NO. That is a VERY old, outdated and obsolete web page from several versions ago.

I'm talking about the **HELP FILE** that came with the product. You know? The TRIAL version of CTCI-WIN that you installed? That one? It comes with a **>> Help <<** file. A standard Windows Help file just like millions of other Windows products do, so you can do things like, um, I don't know, maybe GET HELP on how to use the product any time you need by (here's the crazy part) selecting the "CTCI-WIN Help" command from the (of all things) "Help" menu.

I didn't include it in my product so people could ignore it and never read it.

So basically you have a pure wireless network.

You don't have any non-wireless (wired) adapters on this box at all.

That's your problem right there.

CTCI-WIN doesn't support wireless networking. At all. Period. Full stop.

Wireless networking adapter are not the same as wired networking adapters. WinPCap only works with WIRED networking adapters. Thus, CTCI-WIN can only work with WIRED networking adapters. This is unlikely to ever change.

WinPCap does in fact work on wireless network adapters ... I use it every

Thus, CTCI-WIN can only
work with WIRED networking adapters. This is unlikely to ever change.

WinPCap does in fact work on wireless network adapters ...
I use it every day in my job.

Fish,

"And AirPcap costs LOTS of money:

WinPCap does in fact work on wireless network adapters ...
I use it every day in my job.
Define "use it".
After you define "using it", then please check to make sure you're
http://www.riverbed.com/products/steelcentral/steelcentral-riverbed-airpcap.html
I am pretty darn sure (99.99999+% certain) WinPCap works only with 802.3
wired Ethernet packets, not 802.11 wireless packets.
At best, it *might* (BIG maybe) be able to *see* emulated Ethernet frames,
but one thing is for certain: it cannot *inject* (send) any 802.3 Ethernet
packets to an 802.11 wireless adapter, and THAT is where the problem lies.
"Q-16: Which network adapters are supported by WinPcap?"
https://www.winpcap.org/misc/faq.htm#Q-16
* Wireless adapters: these adapters may present problems, because
they are not properly supported by the Windows Kernel. Some of
them are not detected, other don't support promiscuous mode. In
the best case, WinPcap is able to see an Ethernet emulation and
not the real transiting packets: this means that the 802.11 frames
are transformed into fake Ethernet frames before being captured,
and that control frames are not received.
* For real wireless capture, CACE Technologies offers the AirPcap
adapter, specifically designed to sniff 802.11 traffic, including
control frames, management frames and power information. AirPcap
at this time is the only solution for capturing raw 802.11 traffic
with WinPcap. More details can be found on the AirPcap product page.
http://www.cacetech.com/products/catalog/
So while you may THINK you are using WinPCap you more than likely probably aren't.
Or is you are, you're only using to SNIFF traffic, and happen to be lucky
in that WinPCap is able to see the emulated 802.3 Ethernet packets being
dynamically generated from your wireless adapters' 802.11 wireless packets.
OR... your company is using AirPcap which comes with (and directly
interfaces with) WinPcap.
But WinPcap by itself, in its native form, does *NOT* work with wireless adapters.
At all.
Period. Full stop.
I've been down this path before Joe, and it's a dead end. Trust me on
this. I would love nothing more than to get CTCI-WIN working on wireless
adapters. Truly.
But with just WinPCap to rely on it just is NOT going to ever happen.
At least not until WinPCap comes out with some new feature that supports it.

Touché. :)

Okay, fine. Then please explain to all of us what the magic ingredient is. What does one have to do to get it to work? How does one do it?

Perhaps it would be better to have this technical discussion off list? Then once (IF!) I finally get it working I can share with the community how to do it (once I make whatever programming changes that might be necessary to CTCI-WIN of course, if any).

In the mean time I have downloaded all of the documentation from the web site you posted above and will begin looking at it.

Thanks!

Hi Fish,
not really, The answer is in the fine print.
His tools work for him. This is cool (for him), and his letter insinuates that you don't know
what you're talking about, but at the same time implying that of course you should
know his product and that he is using it, and not the generic windows WLAN stack that
everybody else has on their Windows PC.
Okay, fine. Then please explain to all of us what the magic ingredient is. What does one have to do to get it to work? How does one do it?
You buy a single-sourced USB 2.0 Stick with a proprietry 802.11b/g Adapter for about $298
or go for the USB 2.0 802.11a/b/g/n Adapter at $698.00 a pop.

(Don't forget that some of your customers will be paying shipping, Customs and maybe 19% VAT on top.)

I don't think you'd have all that many people who use this particular USB-Stick.
This isn't your "generic windows WLAN stack" as found on almost all Laptops running Windows.
In the mean time I have downloaded all of the documentation from the web site you posted above and will begin looking at it.
That's a good start; The small print and the FAQs are interessting.
I found "https://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/WLAN" particularly interessting,
particularly at the #Linux and #Windows, and of course #AirPcap markers.

I did some reading at the company's site, but not being able to read the Software License Legalese
is somewhat of a showstopper for me.
(Said as someone who uses wireshark very often, but windows very seldom.)
Thanks!

Now as to your other points ... I have GREAT respect for Fish and his work.
But making a categorical statement that WinPCap NEVER works with WLAN is
where I called him out and solely for that reason.

Generally, WinPCap works with the NDIS drivers. Fish is correct in that
*SOME* of these drivers provide emulated 802.3 frames (but not all). There
is another product that provides way more info than WInPCap which is
AirPCap.

There is also AcrylicWIfi which is a fairly decent product.

Hi Joe

That might do that where you live, but here in Germany it redirects to the following URL:
http://de.riverbed.com/error/?errorURL=http%3A%2F%2Fde.riverbed.com%2Flegal%2Flicense.html&c=y&referURL=

Reading the Site from here is quite funny actually, beause parts of it have been denglischified
and parts remain in NeuDeutsch. Looks like the CMS has problems with LOCALE on the client side.
Thanks for the correct URL, wget works just fine :-)
