Discussion:
Strange problem with hercules

I'm trying to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux/s390 2.9.5AS (Taroon)
under hercules. Versions are as follows:
Hercules Version 2.17.1
Running on Linux i686 2.4.21-0.13mdk (Mandrake)

First: My configuration:

CPUSERIAL 000069 # CPU serial number
CPUMODEL 9672 # CPU model number
MAINSIZE 256 # Main storage size in megabytes
XPNDSIZE 0 # Expanded storage size in megabytes
CNSLPORT 3270 # TCP port number to which consoles connect
NUMCPU 1 # Number of CPUs
LOADPARM 0120.... # IPL parameter

255.255.255.0
0581 3420 ./tapes/lintap.tdf

Now the problem. I can get my network up, during the install I can
even connect using ssh. But when I specify that I want to install
from FTP, I get a ctc reset message on the hercules console, and
nothing happens after that. I also get some messages about reverse
lookup failure.

I've done some research, and I seem to be getting errors under hercules:
.ifconfig
ifconfig

but what is wierd is that under Mandrake, I am not seeing any errors:

My question is why I'm getting TX packet errors on the linux running
under hercules? IE:

Any help is appreciated.

nothing happens after that. I also get some messages about reverse

:

I saw the same thing with taroon, using both CTC and LCS.
I was using a RedHat 7.2 intel base system.
The bypass I used was to do:
.ifconfig ctc0 up
on the hercules console when the telnet session running
anaconda hung. That allowed the RedHat installer to proceed.
I also ran into problems getting the virtual 3390-3 formatted,
so I ran:
.dasdfmt -l LABEL -d cdl -b 4096 -f /dev/dasde
from the hercules console, right after entering the FTP
info and before the anaconda Autopartition/DiskDruid choice.

The taroon install then completed normally, but when I
went to boot from the newly installed system I got:
HHCCP011I CPU0000: Disabled wait state
PSW=000A0000 DEADB220
and I haven't figured that one out yet.

This wait state looks like a service processor error, could you add
'pgmprdos licensed' to your config and see if the problem remains?

I took your advice, that the file had an EOF, and reloaded the beta.
I got the same exact results.
From what I see during the install, all goes fine, until the end.
The install completes normally, but does not unmount the volume. I
tried doing a sync but that command was not available on the
installation cd. I did a shutdown now, and it did shutdown the
system, but I'm afraid that some of the data did not get written to
the root partition (specifically the boot sector, etc). Has anyone
successfully installed the latest redhat beta (2.9.5AS) (Anaconda)?
Just as a note, it DID install ok on our real mainframe!
Thanks,
Harris

I'm trying to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux/s390 2.9.5AS
Hercules Version 2.17.1
Running on Linux i686 2.4.21-0.13mdk (Mandrake)
Now the problem. I can get my network up, during the install I can
even connect using ssh. But when I specify that I want to install
from FTP, I get a ctc reset message on the hercules console, and
nothing happens after that. I also get some messages about reverse
lookup failure.
I saw the same thing with taroon, using both CTC and LCS.
I was using a RedHat 7.2 intel base system.
.ifconfig ctc0 up
on the hercules console when the telnet session running
anaconda hung. That allowed the RedHat installer to proceed.
I also ran into problems getting the virtual 3390-3 formatted,
.dasdfmt -l LABEL -d cdl -b 4096 -f /dev/dasde
from the hercules console, right after entering the FTP
info and before the anaconda Autopartition/DiskDruid choice.
The taroon install then completed normally, but when I
HHCCP011I CPU0000: Disabled wait state
PSW=000A0000 DEADB220
and I haven't figured that one out yet.

I've been unable to continue after doing the ".ifconfig ctc0 up". I
can reconnect, but anaconda install doesn't continue. Is there
something special you did after the ".ifconfig ctc0 up"?

No, nothing special. Just do the ".ifconfig xxx up"
before the telnet/anaconda session times out. You might
want to try doing another ".ifconfig" after that to make
sure the ip addresses (local & remote) got set.

I never did get a RedHat Enterprise Linux 3 (Taroon) install
to work on hercules. Even after getting past the DEADB220
problem, I never got past the 0E0F problem.

Out of curiosity:
What site did you download the Taroon beta from?
When I initially downloaded the 's390x' iso images
(for beta 3) from one of the mirror sites (mirror.mcs.anl.gov)
then I found that my
taroon-s390x-disc2.iso
file had the correct LENGTH but a bad md5sum (didn't match
the posted md5sum). Re-downloading it from that site produced
the same bad md5sum. Downloading it from redhat.com themselves
finally produced an iso file with the matching md5sum.

The other three (1,3,4) iso images had the correct md5sums
in either case.

Just a thought...

Chuck,

All images were downloaded from RedHat over our super-duper internet
connection at work. We're using the same images to successfully
install the betas on our real z800 under zVM at work. The connection
is via zVM-emulated CTCs, so the installation is "exactly" the same in
zVM and Hercules. I'm running Hercules under the Taroon beta (i386
version). I think we checked the md5sums and they're all OK. Also,
this "reset" problem has occurred on beta 1 both 31 and 64 bit, as
well as beta 2 64 bit.

There are two problems here, one being the ctc reset, and the other
being the disabled wait states. I've been looking around in Linux and
Hercules, but I'm a s390 assembler guy, and I'm not fluent in C.

I think the "DEADB220" is a kernel panic saying that Linux needs the
B220 instruction, which is a service processor call. That sort of
implies that the B220 instruction needs to be added to the "PRGMPRDOS
RESTRICTED" group of instructions. I haven't been able to find the
string "E0F" (from the E0F00E0F wait state) anywhere in Hercules or
Linux, other than one little table of bytes from 0x00 to 0x0f. So,
I'm not sure what that's all about. Maybe it's not an on-purpose wait
state, and is just an overlay in an interrupt new-PSW location, or a
destroyed source for a LPSW instruction. Since I haven't even been
able to do the install under Hercules, I haven't been able to test the
IPL problems.

I still haven't had time to hunt down the code which fools around with
the CTC during Taroon install, so I don't know what the reset is from.
